Artist Statement & Bio
JMC is an ambidextrous neo-expressionist whose pastel and charcoal drawings fuse ancestral memory with visionary intensity. The foundation of each work is executed in a single, uninterrupted session, with detail layers added across subsequent sittings—featuring bold contours, masked faces, cosmic eyes, and figures dissolving into color and frequency. His most recent series is inspired by the spiritual and geological energy of Sedona’s red-rock landscape, translating raw landscape force into contemporary form.
Raised in the American South and based in Florida, JMC draws on a lifetime of cultural intersections to inform a deeply intuitive practice. Though naturally right-handed, he has explored drawing with both hands, creating a direct channel for immediacy and psychic resonance. Critics and collectors describe his work as immersive, emotional, and “strangely familiar,” evoking both memory and transcendence.
After a hiatus dedicated to personal and family commitments, JMC returned to full-time studio practice in 2025 with renewed focus. In 2026, JMC self-published Women of Faith, a devotional art book featuring 25 original neo-expressionist pieces paired with spiritual reflections. His ongoing Marker Stones series explores sacred “thin places” of trial and renewal.
JMC now concentrates on developing major series, fostering collector relationships, and presenting his work in top markets, including Sedona, Santa Fe, Los Angeles, Bogotá, and Jerusalem. With a background in industrial engineering, he brings analytical systems thinking to his creative process—pattern recognition and problem-solving that complement intuitive expression. This blend fuels interdisciplinary interests, including art/science collaborations on themes of disturbance, ecology, and resilience.
In addition to his studio work, JMC undertakes select commissions that engage personal narrative, memorial, and spiritual themes, always maintaining the same immediacy and visionary energy that defines his practice.
